March is National Social Workers Month, a time to highlight the work of social workers in our community. This year’s theme is “Social Workers: Generations Strong.” It is important to acknowledge and honor the positive impact the social work profession has had on our society for generations. With a 111-year history, Family & Children’s Service (FCS) has evolved its programs and services to meet the needs of the community. What has always remained the same is the compassionate care, intervention and education both past and present social workers have provided.

Today, Family & Children’s Service’s social workers serve nearly 8,000 clients in Monmouth and Middlesex counties.

Our Adult Protective Services (APS) teams in Monmouth and Middlesex counties investigate cases of suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation of vulnerable adults living in the community. FCS has been selected by the counties to be the provider of service, in accordance to state law, for this federally mandated program. The role of the APS social worker is to stabilize a crisis situation using the least intrusive methods while respecting an individual’s right to self-determination.

Our Community Support Services (CSS) team connects people with chronic physical or mental disabilities to an array of programs and services to keep them living at home for as long as possible. Every case is different, which is why our CSS social workers are uniquely qualified to help, using their professional skill set and knowledge to address concerns and offer guidance.

Our Representative Payee (Rep Payee) team manages the social security benefits of clients, who, because of physical, cognitive or mental health disabilities, cannot manage their money on their own. For some clients, the inability to manage funds puts them at greater risk of homelessness. By ensuring their rent and other bills are paid on time, our Rep Payee social workers help our clients maintain their dignity and respect, while promoting their independence in the community.

“As we all know, a career in human services is not for the faint of heart.” Says Colleen Verriest, FCS CEO and License Clinical Social Worker for 17 years.  “I am deeply grateful for the compassion, care, and fortitude all of you have demonstrated during this trying time.”

Thank you, social workers, for the life-changing work you do each and every day!
